The border town of Mértola stands out on the right bank of the Guadiana, where several water courses come together and is framed by the Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana (The Guadiana Valley Natural Park). The town’s natural landscape, of great natural beauty, is dominated by the unevenness of the river and of the forest that spreads along a rough territory. Its ancient history and the broad heritage associated with it date back to the Neolithic period, although the Roman and the Muslim periods stand out.
Mértola is one of the common Grupo do Risco destinations, where artistic residencies and drawing courses are promoted ever since its foundation. The old town is a museum, and the paths that surround it take us to winding hydrological features of the Guadiana River in Paúl do Lobo, to the montado plains and decadent remains of industrial archeology.
